Staff Software Engineer (m/f/d)
Senior IC owning the foundation of Podero’s scalable energy platform
At Podero, we’re building the future of energy consumption – combining the power of smart software with everyday devices to transform how people consume energy. Our mission is bold: turn homes and their devices into the most powerful tool for reducing CO₂ and electricity costs. We’re early and moving fast. We’re backed by leading investors like Planet A and Systemiq Capital and already working with major energy providers like E.On and Total Energies.
If you’re excited about shaping a company from the ground up and solving real-world problems with cutting-edge technology, Podero is the place to do it. Join us to build a company that’s lean by design, technically deep, and obsessed with solving the energy transition’s hardest problems.
Role Overview
As a Staff Engineer at Podero, you will own and shape the architecture of our platform - the backbone that enables us to orchestrate thousands of devices today and millions in the future. You’ll design and build the systems that make Podero reliable, traceable and scalable.
You’ll work end-to-end across platform primitives, backend services, APIs, and integrations with hardware and control systems. You collaborate closely with Product to understand real-world constraints and ensure the platform evolves in a way that drives user value and commercial outcomes. You’ll break complex problems into small, iterative steps and ship quickly, validating impact along the way.
This is a role for someone who loves building platforms, solving hard engineering problems, and thinking one step ahead of the scaling challenges we’ll face in 6–12 months.
What You Will Do
- Own multi-month engineering projects end-to-end, from architectural approach to deployment, operation, and iteration.
- Design and evolve Podero’s platform architecture so it can scale to millions of connected devices with high reliability and observability.
- Build the core backbone systems that handle real-time orchestration, telemetry processing, scheduling, and integration logic.
- Develop and integrate external APIs from energy hardware, IoT devices, and control systems into a unified orchestration layer.
- Drive platform reliability through better tracing, monitoring, failover strategies, and performance optimizations.
- Shape product direction by working closely with Product to connect commercial goals, user needs, and technical feasibility.
- Break large problems into small, testable, iterative pieces, shipping value continuously.
- Collaborate with customers when needed to understand real workflows and ensure what we build matches the complexity of the energy domain.
- Uphold engineering excellence, conducting design reviews, code reviews, and sharing best practices across the team.
- Generalize solutions into platform capabilities that future engineers can build on.
What You Bring
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 2–3 years operating at a Senior or Staff level with end-to-end ownership of major systems or projects.
- Proven experience designing and operating complex, reliable, production-grade platforms that run at scale.
- Strong engineering fundamentals with deep experience in distributed systems, scalability, and observability.
- Deep understanding of resiliency and hands-on experience applying resilient architecture patterns to build highly reliable software.
- Experience building external API integrations, ideally with hardware systems, control logic, or IoT ecosystems, and an understanding of how physical devices behave in practice.
- Knowledge of continuous delivery tools and cloud-native engineering practices, with experience shipping and operating software in modern cloud environments.
- Comfort working with high autonomy in fast-moving startup environments where speed, ownership, and clarity matter.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with Product, Engineering, and customers to shape technical decisions.
- Curiosity for the energy domain, the transition to flexible consumption, and the challenges of orchestrating real-world devices in reliable and scalable ways.
- Familiarity with modern backend ecosystems; our stack includes Python, Rust, event-driven systems, and cloud platforms (GCP).

About Podero
Energy suppliers face many challenges in their B2C business, including low margins, low differentiation of their electricity offers, emerging market players, unprofitable electricity trading, and limited IT resources.
Podero is a software platform for utilities that reduces the energy cost of flexible consumer devices like heat pumps, EVs and chargers, inverters, and home batteries by over 25%. Utilities roll out Podero using our white-label web app or integrating our API into their apps. Podero steers devices based on consumers’ PV production, fluctuating spot electricity prices, and the grid-stabilizing balancing energy markets. Podero enables utilities to trade the aggregate device power on the energy markets, ensuring a win-win situation for both utilities and consumers.
Customers of Podero include E.ON, TotalEnergies, oekostrom, KELAG, and more.
